Half Term Fun at The Roses
The Roses Theatre and Cinema in Tewkesbury is bursting at the seams this February half term with a number of activities for children, adults and the whole family to enjoy together.
James Campbell’s Comedy For Kids (Wednesday 15 February 2.30pm) is the perfect introduction to stand up comedy for children, giving young people over the age of six the opportunity to laugh their way through a hilarious sketch, just like their parents do.
Guaranteed to be rude word exempt from start to finish, this child friendly stand up routine may or may not cover three dancing oatcakes called Celia, Amelia and Deal or no Delia, an attempt to make parsnips more interesting, and the crucial advice of how to look a chicken in both eyes at the same time.
“The Roses is well known on the comedy circuit for attracting big well known comedians like Michael McIntyre and Jack Dee, but sometimes their content is not suitable for children” explains Beckie Smith from The Roses. “James Campbell’s Comedy For Kids is the perfect opportunity for young ones to experience stand up comedy, without their parents worrying about needing to answer awkward questions when they get home”.
For those children who are keen to develop their own comedy skills, the Laugh Out Loud Comedy Workshop (Tuesday 14 February 10.30am – 4.30pm) is the perfect opportunity. Young people will work with professional facilitators and will learn how to form the perfect joke and deliver it to an audience of awaiting comedy fans.
Younger families will enjoy Family Zumba (Thursday 16 February 10.30am – 1.30pm), a great way for parents and children aged 2+ to learn funky new moves, develop a groove and move to the beat together. As Zumba fever is taking over the nation, and more and more people enrol at various Zumba classes, this is Family Zumba Workshop is the perfect way for families to come together to take part in something that suits everyone.
For adults who feel that they deserve a treat even if they are unable to get the whole week off work, the Make Do And Mend Workshop (Saturday 18 February 10.30am – 1.30pm) takes the popular slogan from war time England, and brings it bang up to date as people try to save their pennies in response to today’s economic climate. Complete with instruction from skilled seamstresses, participants who bring their own old clothing and off cut materials will leave with the skills they need to turn a throw away out fit into next week’s must wear item.
Family films this half term week include Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, that follows a young orphan boy who lives within the walls of a Paris train station as he completes his quest to join his long lost father to a shop owner and a heart shaped lock without a key. The dancing penguins are back in 3D in Happy Feet Two, which promises to be a fun filled film for all the family and finally, Alvin And The Chipmunks return for another action packed adventure in their new film Chip Wrecked.

Invitation to BasicNeeds Community Animation Programme
Community Gatherings
BasicNeeds is an international charity working in Gloucestershire to improve the lives of people with disabilities and people with mental health problems.
In order to get a true picture of life in Gloucestershire we are holding a number of Community Gatherings across the county, where people will have the chance to describe their lives and aspects they would like to change. These sessions will be interactive and fun.
You are invited to attend one of these gatherings and bring along your friends and relatives to join us, we are particularly interested to hear from people with lived experience of disability and mental illness.
We will include your views in a final report which will inform the direction our programme takes. The report will be made available to all those involved in the gatherings.
Refreshments and transport costs will be provided. Children and care givers are very welcome. You can just turn up or let us know you are coming by contacting Rosie Branney on 01242 539930 or on rosie.branney@basicneeds.org.
BasicNeeds has been commissioned by Barnwood Trust to run the Community Animation Programme (CAP), a key part of the Trust’s new ten year plan ‘Unlocking Opportunities’.
