BITE SIZE IGNITE – pushing boundaries of inclusive dance practice : 6 choreographic labs

Development opportunity for U.K. dancers to develop their knowledge and understanding (inclusive practice).  Disabled and non-disabled dancers will benefit from R&D work with choreographers.

Karen is a Dance and Drama teacher and has worked with a wide range of adults and young people with disabilities and special needs. Karen has led and choreographed a range of education and performance projects winning the Cheltenham Festivals Cup on a number of occasions with her work for schools.

London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Celebration event at Cheltenham Racecourse on 23 May 2012

GDance is delighted to be involved in producing the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Celebration event at Cheltenham Racecourse on 23 May 2012.

These are the exciting ways that you or your group can become involved in performing at the event:

1        The Carnival Carousel (approx 7.30 – 8.30pm)

You can enter your group to be part of a processional performance in which they dance around the track at the Paddock area of Cheltenham Racecourse.

Requirements:

§         the dance piece must travel forward slowly

§         it must be suitable for viewing from both the front and side

§         it can be related to the themes of ‘Olympics’ or ‘wind’ (not compulsory)

§         it needs to be approximately 4 minutes in length (which will be repeated)

§         your group will need to wear something that identifies you as a group, e.g. Costumes or school uniform.

Practicalities:

§         The floor is a rubberised racetrack. It is similar material as used in children’s playgrounds to protect them from injury when they fall. The track is approximately 2 metres wide

Application process for Carnival Carousel:

-         e-mail jobousfield@madasafish.com for an application form (deadline for return: midday Monday 2 April).

-         Groups will be selected (aiming for a strong representation of the diversity of dance groups / schools in the county) by a cross-arts Torch Relay Celebration panel.

2        Specially Commissioned Choreographed piece

Two short, large scale pieces are being created by professional choreographer Marie- Louise Flexen for performance in the centre of the Carnival Carousel when it stops.  

We are looking for 60 dancers from 10 + years of age, including: 

§         Experienced dancers to form a central focus to the piece

§         Community performers with some experience of dance who have enthusiasm, interest and commitment

§         We will welcome applications from dancers from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds, as well as those with disabilities.

Practicalities:

§         You must be available for all rehearsals on:

-         2, 3, 10, 11 & 12 April

-         9 May (after school) – tbc.

-         21 May (tbc) and 23 May (the day of performance) at Cheltenham Racecourse

§         A schedule will be created with the times you will be required on these dates.

§         Rehearsals will take place in Gloucester or Cheltenham (tbc)

§         Unfortunately, we cannot help with travel arrangements and you would need to organise transport yourself.

 Application process for commissioned piece:

-         e-mail louise@gloucestershiredance.org.uk for an application form (deadline for return: 21 March)

-         Dancers will be selected by the choreographer based on compatibility with her brief for the piece.  You will be informed if you are successful or not by 26 March

3        Flash mob dance

This is a short dance sequence (also choreographed by Marie-Louise Flexen) that will be used in the finale of the Carnival Carousel Performance.  It is a simple sequence that is available on you tube for everyone to learn.

There will be a cue at the end of the performance when all the dancers in the paddock will come into the audience to dance this sequence together before the release of hundreds of white balloons.

Cinderford Artspace Artists Bursary Scheme - applications from interested artists sought

Artspace are looking for more applications, unfortunately the deadline is only a week away, Monday 12th March 2012 at 9.30am.

Its a simple application process and artists can request up to £750, this can be for materials, or training/shadowing, or anything the feel could prepare them for working with children in FOD schools.   Application form and further details are attached.

Support for artists to work in schools
Artist's Bursary Scheme

Between January and March 2012, Cinderford Artspace is co-hosting a pilot project to
support artists who wish to develop their skills to work in schools. This work is being
funded by Create Gloucestershire, and the project is running in two areas of the County:
the Forest of Dean and Stroud.

Artists will be able to apply to Cinderford Artspace for a bursary to support their
development and increase their ability to work effectively in schools. Guidelines are
included in the application form document. Artists are able to apply for up to £750 and may
choose to request funding for anything that they feel will enable them to progress in this
area (for example equipment/materials/training or mentoring).

Application is in writing via a simple application form (Please contact Cinderford Artspace on 01594 825111 ext4, or email: sally@artspacecinderford.org ) which will then be considered at a
panel meeting of lead professionals. Panel meetings take place in January, February and
March. Artists are expected to complete an evaluation of their involvement in this scheme
by early April.  As this project is to benefit Forest of Dean schools, artists must work in the Forest of Dean.

Summer Reading Challenge Workshops

South Gloucestershire Council Libraries and Arts Service are seeking an exceptional artist to lead a series of one off workshops in all of its thirteen libraries as part of the Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge. The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children to read 6 books over the course of the summer holidays with fun charts and stickers to mark their progress. The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge is ‘Story Lab’.

The Reading Agency’s draft concept statement reads, ‘Step into Story Lab, and you’re off on an imaginative adventure that knows no bounds. The brainchild of Prof Cortex, Story Lab is a five-sided hi-tech HQ that attracts stories from all over the world and sends them spinning throughout the city – and beyond! Here you can read, collect, share, create, transmit and broadcast stories. For the Summer Reading Challenge, Prof Cortex has asked the story Lab kids, Will, Rani, Evie and Lex to recover three lost items to boost the imagination of the Story Lab.’

The SRC has been accepted as a Cultural Olympiad Project. The link to the Olympics this year will be made by setting the Story Lab in a thriving metropolis “hosting“ the Olympic Games. The Olympic Games will be hinted at with illustrative references to stadia and sporting clues, rather than an iconic London skyline.  The three stages of the challenge are divided into bronze, silver and gold with medals awarded at each stage.

This provides opportunities for libraries to use the Story Lab as a starting point to appeal to children’s imagination, and take their reading off into new directions. The Reading Agency gives a brief outline of how the challenge stages may be used by libraries as part of the cultural development.

Stage 1: the bronze coin alludes to the history of storytelling and the wealth of tales that have been passed down through the ages. Encompassing non-fiction, historical fiction, and legends through the ages, it makes a link between our past and present, and diverse cultures from all over the world.

Stage 2: the silver mirror represents the power of the imagination that flows through books and fairytales. Reflecting the true potential of the narrator in fiction, it draws a parallel between the world of fairy tale, fiction, myths, and the real world we inhabit today.    

Stage 3: the gold medal is the ultimate achievement and celebrates the transformative nature of books and stories. Just as reading entertains and amuses us, it also affords us the opportunity to enhance and enrich our lives, to push forward personal boundaries and attain new goals. Like the Olympic ideal, it represents a dream within our reach.

It is envisaged that the Reading Agency may publish a special book featuring material (stories, poems, jokes and illustrations) generated by young people during the SRC.

The SGC library service runs a series of arts and crafts workshops to encourage children to come along to the library and participate in the Challenge. We are looking for an artist to provide an initial workshop in each of our libraries as part of this programme to give a real ‘wow’ factor. The library staff are extremely experienced in running craft activities so we are particularly keen to encourage applications from artists working in other artforms such as performance, writing or storytelling or artists who are able to extend making activities into other areas such as animation or performance. It is anticipated that the workshops would take place at the start of the summer holidays over the weeks commencing 23 July and 30 July. The workshops are drop in sessions lasting up to 2 hours each and, in the past, we have had anything from 20 to 60 children of all ages come in over the course of a session. Library staff will be on hand to support the sessions.

There is a fee of £1600 to cover all artist’s fees, expenses and materials, including a planning session with children’s library staff team, all the workshop sessions and evaluation. If you are interested in taking up the Challenge yourselves, please send a copy of your CV with images of your work where appropriate plus a covering letter showing why you think you would be suitable for this commission and an outline of your workshop proposal to Alison.catlin@southglos.gov.uk by Tuesday 6 March, 2012. Create Glos Open Space Event - needs and aspirations of young artists, students and graduates

Dear all,

Please find below the flyer for the next Create Glos Open Space which will be at Parabola Arts Centre, Cheltenham on the 13th April 2012.  

The focus of  this event is the needs and aspirations of young artists, students and graduates. The questions we will explore are:

• how best do you go about making a living in the creative industries in Gloucestershire? 
• what would help to support you as you get started? 
• what are the barriers you may face in getting to the next level?"

The event is free but we need people to book so we know numbers for the catering. Travel bursaries are available for young people who may not otherwise be able to attend.

The event has roughly the same format as our earlier October event but the evening programme is music based.  PAC have an open call for musicians who may want to perform.  Details on the flyer.
