Xposed Club - Wednesday 14th March 2012

The next Xposed Club event will take place in the FCH Chapel (Francis Close Hall), an atmospheric setting for a night of films and specially written and improvised soundtracks.

Starts 8pm

Tickets £5 and £3 students and concessions are available on the door
(or reserve in advance from
Stuart Wilding)

The main act is Peter Urpeth (piano) and Stuart Wilding (percussion) performing a live soundtrack to short films by Man RayL'Etoile De Mer (1928) and Emak-Bakia (1926).

Peter Urpeth (b Romford, Essex 1963) is a pianist, harmoniumist and composer working mostly in improvisation, jazz, theatre music and alternative performance art forms.

His work in the theatre and with film started with onstage accompaniment to Steve Berkoff’s ‘Fall Of The House of Usher’; in Perriere Award-winning shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with Donald Swann (Flanders & Swann) in the Fania Williams / Richard Crane Company; with award-winning writer/performer Leon Robinson and, most recently, in a series of collaborations with poet, film-maker, artist and storyteller, Ian Stephen.

Silent movies are in his blood as his aunt, Constance Urpeth, was a performer in cinemas throughout London during the heyday of the silent movie era.

Favouring adhoc and loose long-term partnerships, Peter has, over the last 30 years, worked with some of Europe’s finest improvising musicians including saxophonists Evan Parker, Lol Coxhill and Raymond MacDonald, guitarist Derek Bailey, trumpeter Jon Impett and vocalist Maggie Nicols. His current group projects include a trio with John Russell and Phil Wachsmann.

He has given performances at the Purcell Room (South Bank Centre, London), and on British Council Tours in France, Belgium and Holland, as well as playing in the Czech Republic with Ian Stephen.

As well as being a musician, Peter is a novelist and poet. His first novel ‘Far Inland’ was published by Birlinn Polygon in 2006.

Also the CIO will be playing live scores to a selection of short films including works by contemporary Russian artist Michael Basov.

You are welcome to bring your own drinks.
Hope you can make it,

BBC Radio 4's Nigel Pargetter (Graham Seed) from The Archers is coming to Stroud Subscription Rooms

Don’t Call Me Nigel…. An Evening With Graham Seed
Stroud Subscription Rooms
Sunday 4th March At 7.30pm,
Tickets From £14 (Concessions Available)

Graham Seed (Nigel Pargetter in BBC Radio 4’s The Archers) comes to The Stroud Subscription Rooms  on Sunday 4th March at 7.30pm to talk about life after Ambridge, his loves, his dreams and how he met Nigel…

Graham trained at RADA and played Nigel Pargetter in The Archers from 1983 – 2011. In this charming and informative evening, he will be talking about your favourite Borchester characters along with many personal tales from this much loved actor.  Not only was he the Laird of Lower Loxley, but he is also just as well known for numerable stage, TV and film performances including, amongst others, working with Victoria Wood and Sir John Gielgud.

He is currently on a national tour of Yes Prime Minister playing the role of Jim Hacker.  His most recent work includes the UK tour of Basket Case with Nigel Havers and is frequently heard on BBC Radio 4’s What the papers say…

He has recently been voted RADIO BROADCASTER OF THE YEAR 2010 in ‘recognition of his 27 years as the charming and eccentric aristocrat Nigel Pargetter in The Archers’ by the Broadcasting Press Guild.  He is also a recipient of the Voice of the Listener and Viewer 2010 SPECIAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN BROADCASTING – sponsored by Roberts Radio.

Graham said “It is with huge sadness that I leave The Archers after 27 years. Nigel Pargetter was a joy and a privilege to play, from 'Mr Snowy' to proud father. His enthusiasm, charm and love of life helped make Ambridge a happier place.

Explore with Graham, his love of poetry and remembrances of favourite characters he has portrayed on stage and screen.  Join him for an eclectic mixture of Coward, Wodehouse, A. A. Milne and other original authors.

The audience will have the opportunity of taking part in a question and answer session with Graham at the end of the show.  Maybe you can find out just exactly what happened that night on the roof, and just how high that fall really was?!

Stroud International Textiles (SIT) launches exciting new initiative - Short Films Inspired By Creative Collaborations

OPEN CALL: Short Films Inspired By Creative Collaborations
Opportunity for screening new work online and at ‘Pairings II’ exhibition

Stroud International Textiles (SIT) launches exciting new initiative.
As part of the ‘Pairings II’ exhibition and Symposium that open this spring SIT is  launching a new challenge: to artists and designer makers to create an original  short film – up to 150 seconds long – on the spring exhibition theme of collaborating and sharing creative ideas.
The films should focus on collaboration and can show individuals exchanging skills, the shared use of equipment, tools, or can be a more conceptual presentation.

Entrants can interpret ‘Pairings’ however they like – whether about techniques, ideas, physical objects, skills or conversations - or anything else. (It could be about Pairing the film-making technology itself).

Films can be in documentary, animation, live action, comedy, drama, performance or any other genre. Any artist can enter - from anywhere in the world.
The short films do not have to be highly polished we want them to be original and imaginative.

Whether shot on a mobile phone, Super8 or HD, whether it’s hand-drawn or 3D – we want to see what results from your own Pairings and collaborations,

Selected work will be shown online to run alongside the main “Pairings II” exhibition and will be showcased on SIT website, Facebook and other online locations. We will also be screening a selection of the films at the Pairings exhibition throughout May.

Deadline for final submissions is 1st April 2012.
To download full details and enter, go to

Once it’s ready you are asked to submit your film via Vimeo.com.

This fantastic initiative compliments the ‘Pairings II-conversations & collaborations’ exhibition at the Museum in the Park Stroud that opens on 28th April. Leading designer makers will display the outcomes of these playful duets and trios and the conversations between the makers, where wood meets metal meets stitch – where paper meets embroidery meets radical knitting - and where you can observe the results of a textile artist collaborating with a plastic surgeon and a pattern cutter from Saville Row..

Cordelia Alice Hutchinson Exhibition Preview Invite

Please see below your invite to the next exhibition preview at Taurus Crafts.
Cordelia is Bristol based and is a new exhibitor to the Forest of Dean.

‘Cordelia's work is particularly concerned with the effects of the contrast of colour and texture.
Taking inspiration from the patterned designs of Matisse and the vibrant use of colour of John Singer Sargent.
Many of her recent works are inspired by the sea and the English seaside landscape, as a keen sailor she spends much her time on the coast.
The base coat of her canvases is always a warm cerise which gives her oil and acrylic paintings an energy and vibrancy and offers a unique character to Cordelia's work.’

Jools Holland at Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham

Boogie-woogie piano master Jools Holland is set to take his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra on the road once again for what has now become one of the UK's most popular annual tours.  Starting on Thursday 11th October 2012 at the Belfast Waterfront, the 34 date tour will bring Jools' famous 'big-band' sound and the ultimate party experience across the length and breadth of the country, with some very special guests to accompany him.
The tour, which will see Jools performing two dates at the world renowned Royal Albert Hall in London on Friday 30 November and Friday 1 December, will continue around the UK, finishing on Saturday 22 December at Newcastle's City Hall.
A great addition to the line-up will be former Fine Young Cannibals' frontman Roland Gift.  The singer had huge success with the band during the 1980s with a No. 1 UK album (1988's The Raw and The Cooked), and two No.1 hit singles She Drives Me Crazy and Good Thing - the latter also holds the honour of being the most successful record that Jools Holland has ever guested on, after it went No. 1 in 17 countries.  Roland will be joining Jools on 17 dates of the tour.
Also featuring the astounding vocals of Ruby Turner, Louise Marshall and acclaimed trombonist Rico Rodriguez, Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra tour will provide audiences with a foot-stomping, show-stopping performance that never ever fails to leave the audience wanting more.

The Mansion’s Third Unbridled View – Parabola Arts Centre - April 12th

The Mansion’s Third Unbridled View – Parabola Arts Centre, Cheltenham on Thursday April 12th at 7.30pm.

Tickets available at the box office: www.parabolaartscentre.co.uk

The two and a half hour production is performed by Hand in Glove and directed by Jim Brook

A ‘dystopia’ of breeders, celebrities and military are characterised by codes of behaviour. Another group: a resistance led by an indomitable woman.

These are shocking images of monumental beauty.

‘The Mansion’ dramatises a journey towards a new world order. It leads us from the opening scene of the plague, that is played out in the streets around and then in the theatre, through the formative rituals of ‘The Literature Olympics’ and ‘Docking Station’ and, on the way, takes in the formation of a revolutionary ‘gang’ who, after confronting the military, escapes on a train, undergoes a trial and finally succeeds in transforming the civilisation from within the confines of a prison cell. What we see are human images of secrecy and revelation; of subversion and collusion and, above all, the power of the body through movement, sound, light and gesture, to convey the relationship between inner sensory experience and the external world.

Hand in Glove use movement, gesture and human behaviour to convey a series of memorable images that give new insights into the relationship between the individual and the crowd. Their work exists somewhere between everyday life, physical theatre and dance whilst being a unique form of performance. The company, made up of sixteen local performers whose age range is 15 to 54, was formed in Cheltenham three years ago.  Hand in Glove performed ‘Fugue States’ and ‘On the Other Hand’ - two 20 minute performance works at the University Chapel, Cheltenham and ‘Trans’ at Café Oto, London, last year. They are performing ‘Two Sides to an Envelope’ at Goldsmiths, University of London on February 17th, 2012.

Half Term Fun at The Roses

The Roses Theatre and Cinema in Tewkesbury is bursting at the seams this February half term with a number of activities for children, adults and the whole family to enjoy together.

James Campbell’s Comedy For Kids (Wednesday 15 February 2.30pm) is the perfect introduction to stand up comedy for children, giving young people over the age of six the opportunity to laugh their way through a hilarious sketch, just like their parents do.

Guaranteed to be rude word exempt from start to finish, this child friendly stand up routine may or may not cover three dancing oatcakes called Celia, Amelia and Deal or no Delia, an attempt to make parsnips more interesting, and the crucial advice of how to look a chicken in both eyes at the same time.

“The Roses is well known on the comedy circuit for attracting big well known comedians like Michael McIntyre and Jack Dee, but sometimes their content is not suitable for children” explains Beckie Smith from The Roses. “James Campbell’s Comedy For Kids is the perfect opportunity for young ones to experience stand up comedy, without their parents worrying about needing to answer awkward questions when they get home”.

For those children who are keen to develop their own comedy skills, the Laugh Out Loud Comedy Workshop (Tuesday 14 February 10.30am – 4.30pm) is the perfect opportunity. Young people will work with professional facilitators and will learn how to form the perfect joke and deliver it to an audience of awaiting comedy fans.

Younger families will enjoy Family Zumba (Thursday 16 February 10.30am – 1.30pm), a great way for parents and children aged 2+ to learn funky new moves, develop a groove and move to the beat together. As Zumba fever is taking over the nation, and more and more people enrol at various Zumba classes, this is Family Zumba Workshop is the perfect way for families to come together to take part in something that suits everyone.

For adults who feel that they deserve a treat even if they are unable to get the whole week off work, the Make Do And Mend Workshop (Saturday 18 February 10.30am – 1.30pm) takes the popular slogan from war time England, and brings it bang up to date as people try to save their pennies in response to today’s economic climate. Complete with instruction from skilled seamstresses, participants who bring their own old clothing and off cut materials will leave with the skills they need to turn a throw away out fit into next week’s must wear item.

Family films this half term week include Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, that follows a young orphan boy who lives within the walls of a Paris train station as he completes his quest to join his long lost father to a shop owner and a heart shaped lock without a key. The dancing penguins are back in 3D in Happy Feet Two, which promises to be a fun filled film for all the family and finally, Alvin And The Chipmunks return for another action packed adventure in their new film Chip Wrecked.

Tickets for James Campbell’s Comedy For Kids cost £6 and can be booked via The Roses Box Office on 01684 295074 or online at www.rosestheatre.org. To enrol onto one of the half term workshops, please call Box Office on 01684 295074. Tickets for the Laugh Out Loud Comedy Workshop and Make Do And Mend cost £20, Family Zumba costs £10 for an adult and child joint ticket and places are limited. Film prices are £5 - £6 for children and £6 - £7 for adults. 3D glasses cost £2.

Refreshments and transport costs will be provided.  Children and care givers are very welcome.  You can just turn up or let us know you are coming by contacting Rosie Branney on 01242 539930 or on rosie.branney@basicneeds.org.

BasicNeeds has been commissioned by Barnwood Trust to run the Community Animation Programme (CAP), a key part of the Trust’s new ten year plan ‘Unlocking Opportunities’.
