The Mansion’s Third Unbridled View – Parabola Arts Centre, Cheltenham on Thursday April 12th at 7.30pm.
Tickets available at the box office: www.parabolaartscentre.co.uk
The two and a half hour production is performed by Hand in Glove and directed by Jim Brook
A ‘dystopia’ of breeders, celebrities and military are characterised by codes of behaviour. Another group: a resistance led by an indomitable woman.
These are shocking images of monumental beauty.
‘The Mansion’ dramatises a journey towards a new world order. It leads us from the opening scene of the plague, that is played out in the streets around and then in the theatre, through the formative rituals of ‘The Literature Olympics’ and ‘Docking Station’ and, on the way, takes in the formation of a revolutionary ‘gang’ who, after confronting the military, escapes on a train, undergoes a trial and finally succeeds in transforming the civilisation from within the confines of a prison cell. What we see are human images of secrecy and revelation; of subversion and collusion and, above all, the power of the body through movement, sound, light and gesture, to convey the relationship between inner sensory experience and the external world.
Hand in Glove use movement, gesture and human behaviour to convey a series of memorable images that give new insights into the relationship between the individual and the crowd. Their work exists somewhere between everyday life, physical theatre and dance whilst being a unique form of performance. The company, made up of sixteen local performers whose age range is 15 to 54, was formed in Cheltenham three years ago. Hand in Glove performed ‘Fugue States’ and ‘On the Other Hand’ - two 20 minute performance works at the University Chapel, Cheltenham and ‘Trans’ at Café Oto, London, last year. They are performing ‘Two Sides to an Envelope’ at Goldsmiths, University of London on February 17th, 2012.
